yellow + brown

One of the last projects Becca did for preschool, the bumblebee hangs on the backside of our upper kitchen cabinets, which can be seen from the dining and living rooms.  There's a whole menagerie up there, bugs and sea animals, and I'm having a hard time taking them down.  It's like the end of an era, one that Jessie will enter soon enough.  Is it just me, or is anyone else having a hard time believing it's November already and only 50 some odd days left until Christmas 2007?

At least I'll get one extra hour tonight...  I'd better go make the most of it!

Ah, tub time.  Which means it's closer to Mommy Break Time.  Our nightly routine takes anywhere from sixty minutes to two hours, what with the bath, pajamas, flossing, brushing, stories, last trip to the bathroom, piggyback rides to bed, songs and kisses.  It's exhausting, at the end of an always already long day.  Tonight, I swear I almost didn't make it,  my voice is nearly gone because of the coughing and the smoke and ash inhaled over the past week.  But we did manage, with everyone's cooperation, and now that the two babes are snug in their beds, I'm going to settle down with a piping hot cup of herbal tea, grab my knitting bag, pop in the latest from Netflix, and unwrap a bar of dark chocolate.  And maybe, just maybe, I'll be nice and share with my husband.

Happy Saturday morning!  The babe lost 6 pounds in about 12 days while she was sick.  But now she hasn't stopped wanting to eat since the wedding, and I'm happy to oblige.  Put a little butter in a skillet, use a cookie cutter to cut a shape out of the middle of a piece of bread, crack an egg inside, let it set up and flip once, then serve on a Cinderella blue plate.  Grown up, yet fun, and not a crumb left over.

And here's the cut out shape, which gets toasted right alongside the rest of it.  Uh oh.  That looks so mean and unfair, doesn't it?  But, Jessie, you said you didn't want an egg!  Oh, shoot.  You know what she's looking at, right?  Sitting next to her?  Picture #1?  Oh, my heart is breaking and my mom is going to call me the minute she sees this post.  I'd better go make another...

Just playing around, making some prototypes and figuring out what we (I use the term loosely) should do for Rebecca's Kindergarten class on Halloween.  The school has a policy of no sugary treats.  Cupcakes aren't even allowed for birthday celebrations.  Instead, they suggest granola bars... hmm.  "Have a happy birthday granola bar!" doesn't quite have a nice ring to it, does it?  Anyway, I'm being sarcastic, but honestly the kids will have enough sugar without my contribution, so I'm searching for a fun alternative to chocolate and lollipops.  These need some tweaking, but I like the general idea.

This week's photo comes from the luscious yarn my cousin picked up for me to make her a ring bearer's pillow.  Her wedding is in two weeks, and my daughters are going to be the flower girl and ring bearer, and I'm a bridesmaid.  I've so enjoyed spending time with her this summer, doing "wedding stuff," and hope that our shopping and luncheon dates continue long after she's married and has four kids.

It's very chunky, silky soft wool yarn, and totally heaven to knit with.  After the baby gets her hands on it, though, I don't think it will be quite so white ever again, and might be a tad sticky, as well.

I know my photography skills are not the greatest, I don't get artistic and frameable shots like Amy or Alicia, but all throughout the Year of Color 1 and 2, I do try to only take photos of things that are meaningful to me and my family in some way.  So I was going around the house tonight, last minute as usual, trying to shoot things like the ducks in the bathroom, the eggcups that come out at Easter, but nothing really special.  I downloaded them onto the computer, and along with the dozen or so shots I'd just gotten of static, forced yellow + black, it just so happened that our celebration dinner last night fit the bill perfectly.

It was so much fun (except for the fact that I had hives and an allergic reaction from something earlier in the day - but ignore that part).  Thanks to Cindy, who never fails to come up with the greatest ideas, we had a utensil-less, plate-less, messy, amazing shrimp boil, plus mussels and clams, all washed down with Martinelli's Sparkling Apple-Mango and Apple-Cranberry Ciders.  Happy First Week of Kindergarten, my dear, and here's to yellow + black!

Pink = Austin (usually purple, but Rebecca insists he's pink here) + orange = Tyrone.  The Backyardigans on DVD, as seen through the lens of my daughter's camera.

Becca starts Kindergarten in one week, and I've been looking through some of her old photographs, feeling nostalgic and missing the days when we didn't butt heads ten times before noon.

Wonder if she'd still fit in a two gallon milk carton?
