monster boxes and costumes

Happy Halloween!

The minute I saw these on Liz's blog, I knew I had to make them for teacher gifts this year.  They went together *so* quickly, and even though I didn't have Rolos or Reese's cups for the bolts on the sides, I think the Hershey's kisses worked fine.  Let's face it, even if I did have the Reese's cups, I would've eaten them and not used them on these boxes...

And here are the girls in their costumes for this year.  Kai-Lan and the Not Mad Scientist.  Rebecca was adamant that she *not* have her hair all frizzed out and looking crazy, she wanted to be a serious scientist.  We're also going to equip her with a glow stick that goes inside a plastic test tube, for her radioactive experiment.  Both girls thought of their costumes on their own, I just helped assemble them.  Jessica's came courtesy of Target's clearance rack (orange leggings - $2.48, blue T-shirt - $3.98, red hand-me-down shoes from ??? - free), and Rebecca's white lab coat  came from my closet, the goggles were free from Lowe's, and the glasses are an old pair of mine with the lenses removed.  Awesome.

brushing happily ever after

Tooth brushing has become even more important in our house now that everyone has at least a few permanent teeth in their mouth.  Remember the post about our bathroom redo and my fantasizing about the vanities from CSN stores?  Well, as a result of that post, I was given a gift certificate to use in any one of their 200+ online stores.

Took me a while to choose, but one thing I finally decided on was the My Prince Toothbrush Holder and Timer.  It's cute, cute, cute, and the kids love flipping the timer and watching the sand run down as we brush teeth.  3 minutes is a long time, but with all the rinsing and flossing, you really do need all those seconds, and this helps me the kids take their time and not rush.  It matches our bathroom so well, and I just love looking at it.  It's instantly cheery.  When I was a kid, I *hated* brushing my teeth.  And as an adult, brushing my kids' teeth is a chore I like less than most others.  So anything that makes it a little more pleasant gets a big thumbs up in my book!

Today is my daughter's third grade teacher's birthday, and she loves Hello Kitty.  So I quickly sewed up this little keychain charm for her last night.  I haven't done anything with felt in a while, that was fun!

productive even if I'm not posting

Oh my, what a week it's been.  Last Monday it was a record-breaking 118 degrees, then four days later we had lightning and thunderstorms that knocked out our power for 26 kind-of-stressful hours and now, today, it's raining and we had a high of 67.  Sunday is supposed to be 95 again.  I've given up trying to put away the summer clothing, I've got jeans and fleece sweatshirts in the same load of laundry as tank tops and shorts.  Too weird.

But anyway, there has been a lot of crafting going on, even if I haven't been able to blog about it.  I've been busy with paper and rubber stamps, crochet hooks and knitting needles.  Lots of finished projects, I'll share more later!
